As South Korean authorities extended President Yoon Suk Yeol's detention Sunday, his supporters stormed the courthouse that issued the warrant, smashing windows with police shields and using fire hydrants to spray officers.
He is the fifth Korean president to face arrest, following predecessors who underwent criminal investigations and imprisonment after leaving office.
Yoon was arrested in a dawn raid last week, becoming the first sitting South Korean head of state to be detained in a criminal probe on insurrection charges over his botched declaration of martial law.
The arrest has sparked unrest among Yoon’s supporters, with South Korean police detaining dozens of protesters for resorting to violence during demonstrations outside the Seoul Western District Court.
