No-one is interested in the continuation and quick return of the war except for Putin, so it is important to maintain unity around Ukraine and strengthen the position of our state in cooperation with allies - European countries and the USA,
Ukraine needs peace backed by robust security guarantees. I am grateful to Italy for its continued support and partnership in bringing peace in Ukraine closer,
I think on this, the UK and Italy can play an important role in bridge building,
For me, the components of a lasting peace are a strong Ukraine to fight on, if necessary, to be in a position of strength; to negotiate a European element to security guarantees, and that's why I've been forward-leaning on this about what we would do; and a US backstop.
What I am clear about is that if there is to be a deal, if there is to be a stopping of the fighting, then that agreement has to be defended, because the worst of all outcomes is that there is a temporary pause and then Putin comes again
Today I will reaffirm my unwavering support for Ukraine and double down on my commitment to provide capacity, training and aid to Ukraine, putting it in the strongest possible position.
I am clear in my mind that he does want a lasting peace.
If we don't have an American security guarantee within Nato, if we lose them, we're going to be spending a hell of a lot more (on defence).
If the central question you're putting to me is do I trust Donald Trump when he says he wants lasting peace?
Because I've spoken to him a number of times
I don't think it was an ambush, I think that both parties are working for their respective national interest, and they seem to be speaking at cross-purposes
My driving purpose has been to to bridge this, if you like, and get us back to the central focus
Well, no, I wouldn't trust Putin, which is why I want a security guarantee
We are all very committed about a goal that we all want to achieve, which is a just and lasting peace in Ukraine
Later that day, I then picked up the phone to President Trump, and I picked up the phone to President Zelensky, because, to my mind, focus has to be a lasting peace in Ukraine,
Mr. President, Mr. President, with respect, I think it's disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office and try to litigate this [issue] in front of the American media."
Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the aggressed people. I think we were all right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago, and to continue to do so."
I'm talking about the kind of diplomacy that will end the destruction of your country."
Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It's up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge."
Strong men make peace, weak men make war. Today President @realDonaldTrump stood bravely for peace. Even if it was difficult for many to digest. Thank you, Mr. President!"
